She was born in a middle-class family on 24 May 1954 in the Nakuri village, Uttarakhand. Her father was one of the tradesmen who supplied groceries from India to Tibet. |
She was selected as one of the members of the elite group who were permitted to attempt adventure on Mount Everest. In which there were six Indian women and seven men who got this opportunity. |
She has also been awarded the third-highest civilian award Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2019. |
