While footwear has advanced tremendously over the last century, one thing that has remained constant is that shoes will always require adequate maintenance to keep them in good condition. We now have a wide variety of footwear options, ranging from leather to canvas and everything in between. It’s perplexing to believe that every sort of shoe necessitates extra attention. In absence of proper care, they start to smell and dent the overall look as well. Not only this but the health of the feet is also affected by wearing footwear that has become torn, damp, or soiled with dust. Therefore, proper maintenance of footwear is essential. If you follow certain shoe care tips that are given below, your shoes may well outlast you.
- If leather shoes have become dirty, first of all, clean the dust on them with a leather brush. Then clean them by applying leather cleaner to a cotton cloth. Let it dry for some time. After that polish them. You can use a cream or paste-based polish. By doing this, proper moisture remains in them. The vase-based polish forms a protective layer on the footwear. It is also good to use a leather conditioner.
- Sprinkle baking soda inside the shoes evenly to kill the bad odor. The baking soda will absorb excess moisture and prevents the growth of bacteria.
- You must remove the laces from your shoes before cleaning or polishing them.
- Fabric or canvas shoes can be wiped clean by hand. After washing and drying, crush and fill the newspaper inside them so that their shape does not get deformed.
- To protect the heels, accessories like heel covers can be used. Many footwear has heel caps. If they are broken, get them replaced. These are available in almost all the footwear shops. Heel caps balance of your movements.

- When wet, wipe the footwear with an old towel. After that keep them under the fan to dry. Do not dry them in the sun, as this can expose their natural moisture and color. You can dry white canvas shoes under the sun, but they should not be dried for long periods of time, as this can cause them to become hard or frizzy.
- If the sole of the heels is damaged, replace it. This is important because only when the sole is correct, the feet get proper arch support. Failure to do so may result in foot pain.
- Make sure to spray weatherproof liquid on expensive footwear as they can get soaked and spoiled if it rains suddenly. Keep doing this from time to time. Weatherproof sprays act as antibiotics for shoes when the weather changes. There are many footwear sprays on the market that can be used to care for all types of leather shoes.
- After use, keep the shoes and slippers in the rack only after brushing the dust and soil.
- Protect shoes from direct sunlight or do not store them in places with high temperatures. Excess sunlight can cause the color of the shoes to fade.
